The BREATHE Study: Bronchiolitis Recovery and the Use of High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) Filters

Study Purpose:

The BREATHE Study is a randomized, double-blinded, multi-center clinical trial that will enroll infants less than 12 months of age hospitalized with bronchiolitis. Families of infants in the study will be sent active or inactive HEPA air filtration units after they are discharged from the hospital. The purpose of the study is to determine whether using active air filtration units in the home decreases infants’ chances of developing breathing problems. At the end of the study, all families will receive active air filtration units.

Acute viral bronchiolitis is the most common reason for infants less than 2 years old in the United States being hospitalized with about 130,000 admissions per year.1,2 Bronchiolitis is a wheezing illness usually caused by a lung infection with a virus (such as Respiratory Syncytial Virus, RSV).Babies hospitalized for bronchiolitis are at high risk for cough, wheezing and breathing problems that can last for up to a year and they have a higher risk of developing asthma.

Study Design:

  • There are 17 hospitals in the U.S. participating
  • Up to 218 infants will be in the study
  • Participant families will receive air units and monitors to measure air quality in the home
  • Researchers will conduct surveys with caregivers to collect information about the infants
  • Respiratory symptoms
  • Healthcare visits
  • Time away from home
  • The study equipment in the home
  • The study is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH)

Study Duration:

  • The participant children will be followed for respiratory outcomes over 24 weeks

Study Compensation:

Participants will be compensated for their time.  This will be discussed in detail with study staff at time of screening.
